Mechanical Engineer, Barrett Technology LLC, Newton MA Sep 2011–May 2017
Lead design for BURT™ 3-degree of freedom neurorehabilitation robotic arm (patent no. US 10,130,546 B2). Managed mechanical engineers to develop product additions, prototypes, test rigs, and documentation. Researched user needs, developed use cases and specifications, designed mechanical assemblies, performed tests and engineering analyses, and guided mechanical, software, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary engineering team. Worked with manufacturing department to support customers and improve product design and assembly processes.
- Prototyped, designed, created drawings for, and tested majority of parts for BURT (150+ part assembly comprising machined, sheet metal, thermoformed, and 3D printed parts).
- Kept COGS low enough to sell robot for $20,000 less than competitors while meeting all 6 development milestones necessary to receive $1.8 million DARPA low cost arm grant.
- Developed use cases, system requirements, and architecture documents to guide engineering development.
- Performed ISO 14971 risk analysis to ensure FDA compliance and patient safety.
- Presented BURT at tradeshows and hospitals to directors and other decision makers.
- Designed optical encoder upgrade for two joints in Barrett Wrist to increase positional accuracy 13x.
- Researched and tested several drive cable materials and lubrications on custom cable fatigue tester to identify new formulation with 10x longer fatigue life.
- Created photorealistic renderings of Barrett products for advertisements and reports.
Mechanical Engineer, Active Shock LLC, Manchester NH Jan 2009–Aug 2011
Designed active shock absorber parts (particularly sensor solutions), performed analyses, built and ran test fixtures, assembled prototypes, and communicated with vendors and machine shops as part of production transition team. Administrated SolidWorks and Workgroup PDM.
- Managed release of company’s first production steering angle sensor, including testing water exclusion and tensile testing, redesigning parts, designing assembly procedure, quoting, purchasing, and communicating with vendors to ensure that parts were delivered on time and in spec.
- Designed, built, and programmed <$1500 environmental test chamber to run accelerated steering sensor life-cycle durability testing.
- Communicated with Chinese parts manufacturers to quote 500-10,000 piece pricing and build samples while overcoming language and standards differences to meet design specifications.
- Designed injection molded bracket and assisted with calibration algorithm for low-cost programmable Hall effect seat position sensor for construction vehicles.
